Emilia Clarke chats with Access at the 2011 HBO Winter TCAs about landing the role of Daenery Targaryen in “Game of Thrones.” What has been the best part for her about playing this character? Plus, what do her parents think about her landing the role?
Previously we met Kit Harrington, who plays Jon Snow. Next up is series favourite Emilia Clarke. After only a handful of minor television roles, Emilia found herself playing a lead role in one of HBO’s most expensive productions to date. It would later earn her an EWwy Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. As Daenerys Targaryen, Emilia plays only one of two surviving children of the Mad King Aerys II. Daenerys was born in exile after Robert’s Rebellion overthrew her father. Raised in the Free Cities across the Narrow Sea by her cruel brother Viserys (Harry Lloyd), Daenerys is a timid girl who is sold to wife by her brother King to the Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) in exchange for an army.
Emilia is a young actress, who recently graduated from the famous London Drama Centre. Her first wide-screen appearance was in the TV-movie Triassic Attack (2010), and she also debuted in TV in one episode of the Doctors.
Her greatest opportunity came when she was cast in Game of Thrones as the youngest living Targaryen, right after Tamzin Merchant left the same role. I believe we can say that she does her job really well.

Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen began Game of Thrones a shy, silver-haired beauty living under the thumb of her brother and then the Dothraki warlord he married her off to, Kahl Drogo. But as the season progressed, she turned into Drogo’s confidante and a horse-heart-eating khaleesi, well on her way to being the character beloved by fans of the books. On the heels of the shocking penultimate episode, we spoke to the 24-year-old Clarke about going straight from drama school in London to a hit show on HBO, the rape scene that wasn’t really in the book, and how that heart tasted.
Even by the standards of other HBO shows such as Band Of Brothers or The Wire, the forthcoming fantasy series, Game Of Thrones is a sprawling mass of interweaving characters and intersecting plot lines. Benefiting from a generous budget and a starry cast (which includes Sean Bean, Mark Addy and Jason Momoa), it’s a dizzying, bloody history of feuds, affairs and intrigue.
Game Of Thrones is so intricate, in fact, that some characters are only glimpsed for a few minutes, at least in the opening pair of episodes we saw before heading off for a series of round-table interviews.
