What’s On Stage: The Seagull with Emilia Clarke has announced new plans for its West End run.

The piece, adapted from Chekhov by Anya Reiss, had to close in previews last March but is now back for a full run. It follows a group of characters, all based at an isolated house in the country, that console each other as their dreams fall apart.

The piece will star Emilia Clarke (Nina), Tom Rhys Harries (Trigorin), Daniel Monks (Konstantin), Indira Varma (Arkadina) and Sophie Wu (Masha), with Katie Buchholz, Tina Harris and Joseph Langdon. Further cast to be announced.

The show opens at the Harold Pinter Theatre on 6 July, with previews from 29 June, running until 10 September 2022.

Jamie Lloyd directs, with design by Soutra Gilmour, lighting design by Jackie Shemesh, composition and sound design by George Dennis, projection design by Duncan McLean, associate direction by Jonathan Glew, casting direction by Stuart Burt, costume supervision by Anna Josephs and props supervision by Fahmida Bakht.

The news comes as Cyrano de Bergerac also confirms a return to UK stages. Lloyd said today, “It is incredibly exciting to confirm the return of these productions and, most importantly, the continuation of our access ticket schemes, with 12,000 £15 seats across the productions and 5000 totally free tickets, which will enable people with limited access to the theatre to experience our work — an important commitment as our industry builds back.

“Alongside our brilliant Emerge participants, we’re thrilled to be welcoming more adventurous artists into the company with the announcement of our new Associate Artists and our writers under commission, who will create bold, radical reappraisals of some iconic international plays. Together, they represent the most exciting and innovative talent working in British theatre today.”

For both Cyrano de Bergerac and The Seagull, 12,000 tickets will priced at £15 across all UK productions, with 75% specifically for under 30s, key workers and those receiving government benefits.

In addition, The Seagull will offer 5,000 free tickets for those with limited access to the arts.

The Jamie Lloyd Company has also announced that Zawe Ashton, Soutra Gilmour, Mika Onyx Johnson and Nima Taleghani will be associate artists, while Jade Anouka, Rachel De-lahay, Reiss and Taleghani have been announced as writers under commission.

VARIETY: “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke and Oscar-nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”) are set to headline “The Pod Generation,” a sci-fi romantic comedy that will be directed by Sophie Barthes. MK2 Films has boarded international sales, and CAA Media Finance is handling domestic rights.

Set in a near future where AI is all the rage and nature is becoming a distant memory, the story revolves around Rachel (Clarke) and Alvy (Ejiofor), a New York couple who are ready to take their relationship to the next level and start a family. Rachel’s work gives them a chance to use a new tool developed by a tech giant, Pegasus, which offers couples the opportunity to share pregnancy on a more equal footing via detachable artificial wombs, or pods. Alvy, a botanist and devoted purist, has doubts, but his love for Rachel prompts him to take a leap of faith. And so begins the wild ride to parenthood in this brave new world.

“The Pod Generation” starts shooting in March 2022. Mk2 films will share the script and sizzle reel at next week’s virtual American Film Market.

“Working with Emilia and Chiwetel as a couple on screen is a dream come true,” said Barthes. “Emilia’s versatility, her disarming sense of humor and capacity to navigate complex emotions are a perfect match to Chiwetel’s charisma and extraordinary screen presence.”

Barthes added that the “idea of the artificial womb as either doom or liberation for women is inherently comedic material.”

Fionnuala Jamison, managing director of MK2 Films, described “The Pod Generation” as a “captivating near-future story with a distinctly feminine twist that really haunts as much as it entertains.” At the same time, she said, it’s “raising ethical questions about where technology is taking us, like once the womb has been commodified, what’s next?”

The executive also pointed out that science fiction hasn’t yet been tackled by many female directors and represents fertile ground for creativity. “We were utterly captivated by Sophie Barthes’ thrilling script and unique vision for ‘The Pod Generation’ and can’t wait to launch sales at AFM,” said Jamison.

“The Pod Generation” will mark Barthes’ third feature following “Cold Souls” and “Madame Bovary,” which played at Sundance, Toronto, Deauville and Telluride.

“The Pod Generation” is being produced by Yann Zenou at Paris-based Quad (“The Death of Stalin,” “The Intouchables”) and Geneviève Lemal for Scope (“Annette,” “Blue is the Warmest Colour”). Clarke is executive producer on the project.

The film will be lensed by Andrij Parekh, cinematographer on HBO’s “Succession” and “Scenes from a Marriage,” as well as “Blue Valentine” and “Watchmen.” Other key crew members include Shane Valentino, the production designer on “Nocturnal Animals” and “Batman Begins”; and Evgueni and Sasha Galperine, the composers of “Happening,” “Loveless” and “The Past.”

Clarke is a four-time Emmy nominee for her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen on “Game of Thrones.” She is also the recipient of the BAFTA Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year. Next up, she will co-star in Václav Marhoul’s Joseph McCarthy biopic alongside Michael Shannon and Dane DeHaan. She is repped by CAA, Range Media Partners, Emptage Hallett, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush and Kaller & Gellman.

Ejiofor, who won a best actor BAFTA for his performance in Steve McQueen’s “12 Years a Slave,” is a five-time Golden Globe nominee and has been twice nominated for an Emmy Award. He’s repped by CAA, Markham Froggatt & Irwin, and Hirsch Wallerstein.

Barthes is repped by CAA, Taylor-Wessing and Paul Nelson at Mosaic who is an executive producer on the project.

DEADLINE: Director Václav Marhoul (The Painted Bird) has tapped two-time Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) to star as controversial U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy in the biopic we first revealed last year.

McCarthy will look at the man behind anti-communist doctrine McCarthyism to understand what drove a lawyer and decorated former U.S. Marine down an unprecedented path of demagoguery, show-trials and venomous populism.

Emmy nominee Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Dane DeHaan (The Place Beyond the Pines) and Scoot McNairy (C’mon C’mon) will star together with Shannon.

Clarke will play McCarthy’s politically ambitious wife Jean Kerr; DeHaan will be his ruthless young lawyer Roy Cohn. Pic is slated to go into production in the fall 2022 in Prague and the U.S.

Tom O’Connor (The Hitman’s Bodyguard franchise) wrote the original screenplay. The film is produced by Zach Studin together with O’Connor. Rick McCallum, producer of the three Star Wars films – The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith will executive-produce.

HanWay Films has come on board to handle international sales and distribution of the movie and will commence sales at next month’s virtual American Film Market. CAA Media Finance will oversee the U.S sale.

Marhoul previously played in Competition at the Venice Film Festival for drama The Painted Bird.

Heads of department include cinematographer Vladimír Smutný (The Painted Bird, Kolja) and Emmy award-winning production designer Ján Vlasák (The Painted Bird).

Post production and VFX will be handled by visual effects and post production house UPP, renowned for their work on Blade Runner 2049, Wonder Woman, Terminator: Dark Fate, Skyscraper, Rampage and Gemini Man.

Zach Studin commented: “The saga of Joe McCarthy is timeless and the drama behind his rise to power, sobering. It is a powerful reminder to us all that truth and facts are the lifeblood of a free and open society. Tom’s exceptional screenplay, Václav’s uncompromising vision and this remarkable ensemble gives the film the necessary foundation to properly explore this chilling and critical chapter of American history.”

HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart also noted: “There are many countries around the world dealing with their own McCarthys right now and it is no surprise that a director who grew up behind the iron curtain should wish to lift the veil on McCarthy, the ultimate architect of populism. True stories are stranger than fiction, and Tom O’Connor’s screenplay is brilliantly researched, both shocking and entertaining, yet treats its villainous characters with true human complexity. Shannon is perfectly suited to inhabit the role of McCarthy and in Jean Kerr, our story’s very own Lady Macbeth, there’s a delicious role for Emilia Clarke.”

Shannon is represented by CAA, Range Media Partners, and Morris Yorn Barnes Levine Krintzman Rubenstein Kohner & Gellman. Clarke by CAA, Range Media Partners, Emptage Hallett, and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush, Kaller & Gellman. DeHaan is represented by CAA, MGMT, and Sloan, Offer, Weber & Dern. McNairy by UTA and The Group Management. Marhoul is represented by CAA, O’Connor by Verve and 42 and Studin by Morris, Yorn, Barnes, Levine, Krintzman, Rubenstein, Kohner & Geller.
