VARIETY Marvel has unveiled the official trailer for “Secret Invasion” out of the D23 Expo on Saturday. The series is slated for release on Disney+ in 2023.

Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury, Ben Mendelsohn will return as the Skrull warrior Talos, Don Cheadle is back as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, Cobie Smulders returns as Maria Hill, plus Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir and Olivia Colman also star. Kyle Bradstreet serves as executive producer and writer.

In the series, Fury returns to Earth and teams up with Talos to prevent a Skrull invasion. Hill has been calling Fury to help back on the planet, but this time he’s finally back to deal with the dangerous Skrull threat. In one scene, Talos faces down Ben-Adir’s character as other Skrulls in the room take on the same appearance as Ben-Adir.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, attendees got an exclusive sneak peek of “Secret Invasion,” which featured clips of Colonel James Rupert “Rhodey” Rhodes — aka War Machine (Don Cheadle) — and Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman). Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige also revealed at Comic-Con that “Secret Invasion” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (premiering Feb. 17, 2023) will mark the beginning of Phase 5 for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“Like Kevin [Feige] was saying, this is a darker show. It’s going to be an exciting thriller. You’re never going to know who people are — are they a Skrull or are they human,” Smulders explained during Marvel’s Hall H presentation.

In addition, Feige announced at Comic-Con that “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” (premiering Aug. 17 on Disney Plus) and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (premiering Nov. 11) will be the last two projects of Phase 4. Other projects in Phase 5 that will be released in 2023 include “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Echo,” “Loki” Season 2 and “The Marvels.”

“Secret Invasion” will stream on Disney Plus in spring 2023. Watch the full trailer below.

A leaker suggests the Game of Thrones actress will play a major role

★★★THIS IS A RUMOR.★★★

THE MARVEL CINEMATIC UNIVERSE has a threat looming under the surface. After a handful of post-credits scenes revealing some characters we know and love are now reptilian Skrulls, there’s no denying that the Secret Invasion is underway.

Ahead of the dedicated Secret Invasion Disney+ series, an MCU leaker has let slip a key role — and she may just become the supervillain of the entire show. Here’s everything you need to know.

According to leaker MyTimeToShineHello on Twitter, Game of Thrones and Solo actress Emilia Clarke will play Veranke, the supervillain of the Secret Invasion comics plotline. Veranke is all over the comics continuity, but she’s probably best known for impersonating Spider-Woman and working as a double agent for Nick Fury.

Veranke’s introduction into the MCU has been a long time coming — leaks as far back as 2019 suggest she’ll be the main villain of Captain Marvel 2, which we now know will be called The Marvels. Now, that leak is slightly discredited by the fact that Zawe Ashton has already been announced as the villain of The Marvels, but there’s always room for multiple antagonists in a Marvel movie. Could this mean Clarke’s debut in the MCU could come sooner than we think?

There are greater implications to this leak too. If Veranke remains true to her comic persona and disguises herself as Spider-Woman, it would also mean Spider-Woman would make her MCU debut. After having three variants of Spider-Man in No Way Home, apparently all bets are off when it comes to Spider-Man in the MCU.

Perhaps there’s a way this leak could co-exist with Zawe Ashton’s role in The Marvels; since Skrulls can take on the image of whoever they want, maybe Zawe Ashton is actually playing Spider-Woman, and Emilia Clarke the true appearance of Veranke, or vice-versa. But considering Emilia Clarke is slated for a role in Secret Invasion, it’s more likely she’ll be playing Veranke.

While exciting, this leak is unconfirmed. Veranke may be neither of these actors. Previous fan theories have posited she may already be in the MCU in the form of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Contessa Valentina, who has now appeared in both The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Black Widow.

Regardless of who Veranke will take the form of, the possibility of Emilia Clarke becoming the Big Bad of Secret Invasion — and maybe MCU movies beyond the series — is intriguing. Could the new Thanos look a lot like Daenerys Targaryen and Qi’ra? We’ll have to wait and see.

SECRET INVASION IS COMING SOON TO DISNEY+.

March 14 2022

Unlike some of Marvel’s other recent projects, like the seemingly perpetually leaking Spider-Man: No Way Home, the aptly named Secret Invasion show is, well, very much a secret. Even as pictures of costumed actors, set videos, and looks at wardrobe warehouses spill out, nothing substantive has been established about the series.

This element of mystery even applies to the characters set to appear in the upcoming series. While fans know that actors Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman will be joining the show, as well as the larger MCU, the roles they are playing are still under wraps.

Even as footage of Clarke’s character in action has made its way onto the internet, it’s still unclear what role she will be playing in the series. For Colman, fans aren’t entirely sure if she’s good or evil, but that goes with the territory when it comes to the Secret Invasion storyline.

Multiple fan theories have guessed that Abigail Brand may appear in the series, though whether the character will be brought to life by Clarke, Colman, another actor, or even not at all is still unclear.

Even as the series itself is largely a mystery, recent comments have shed light on the on-set experience, including the relationships between actors…

Secret Invasion’s (Inter)Stellar Cast

In a recent live talk with Josh Horowitz, actor Samuel L. Jackson spoke to his experience acting alongside his Secret Invasion co-stars, including Emilia Clarke, Olivia Colman, Ben Mendelsohn, and Martin Freeman. Jackson had nothing but praise for Clarke, calling her “amazing.”

“Emilia, amazing. It’s like, c’mon man, you walk on the set and you go, ‘Okay, that’s the Queen of Dragons.’ She’s so tiny. She’s like a fairy, you want to hold her!”

Jackson also shared his excitement at being able to act alongside Olivia Colman, noting that the work was “so glorious and such a ball.”

“When I walked in the room and Olivia Colman was standing there, I was just like, ahahah, this is gonna be so amazing! And she looked at me and went like ahahaha! And, you know, we just started laughing. And when we started to work it was so glorious and such a ball. And not this, you know, serious, crazy, deepness, you know. We were just kind of having a good time. She is so amazing and so effective in a scene. You know, it’s those moments that when you’re in the middle of doing it and you feel it and you watch it happen, that when they finally say cut, all you can do is look at the other person and go, oh my god, that was amazing, that was so great! And she’s like, you’re better than I thought! She was great.”

Behind the Scenes of Secret Invasion

While these comments don’t answer the mystery of who these actors will be playing in the series, they do shed some light on the behind-the-scenes experience, as well as the characters fans can expect Samuel L. Jackson’s somewhat different looking Nick Fury to interact with.

It appears that the process of shooting Secret Invasion has been a largely enjoyable affair, with Jackson pointing towards great experiences with Clarke, Colman, Ben Mendelsohn, and even Martin Freeman. The series sees the MCU continue to increase its roster of talented actors, so it makes sense that Jackson would welcome the chance to work with such highly acclaimed figures.

It also seems that fans can expect to see Nick Fury spend a good deal of time with both Clarke and Colman. Whether this is in a friendly or antagonistic capacity, however, is still unknown.

In all likelihood, these roles will shift over the course of the series, with one or both actors revealed to be Skrull agents. After all, that’s the strength of the Secret Invasion storyline – the shifting relationships and paranoid, unstable relationships. Giving such talented actors roles as Skrulls makes sense, providing them with a range of emotions and characters to play.

Even so, fans wanting to find out more about the scope and style of the Skrull menace presented in the series will likely just have to wait until Disney chooses to provide a more official look, as for now, the secrets of Secret Invasion are still very much under lock and key.
